Traffic Engineering for Multi-homed Mobile Networks

چکیده
This research is motivated by the recent developments in the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to support seamless integration of moving networks deployed in vehicles to the global Internet. The effort, known as Network Mobility (NEMO), paves the way to support high-speed Internet access in mass transit systems, e.g. trains, buses, ferries, and planes, through the use of on-board mobile routers embedded in the vehicle. One of the critical research challenges of this vision is to achieve high-speed and reliable back-haul connectivity between the mobile router and the rest of the Internet. The problem is particularly challenging due to the fact that a mobile router must rely on wireless links with limited bandwidth and unpredictable quality variations as the vehicle moves around. In this thesis, the multi-homing concept is applied to approach the problem. With multi-homing, mobile router has more than one connection to the Internet. This is achieved by connecting the mobile router to a diverse array of wireless access technologies (e.g., GPRS, CDMA, 802.11, and 802.16) and/or a multiplicity of wireless service providers. While the aggregation helps addressing the bandwidth problem, quality variation problem can be mitigated by employing advanced traffic engineering techniques that dynamically control inbound and outbound traffic over multiple connections. More specifically,

Performance of SCTP in Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks with multi-homed mobiles
This paper provides an exhaustive performance analysis by simulation of the SCTP transfer protocol in WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks. We provide also a comparison of SCTP with both transfer protocols UDP for VoIP applications and TCP for FTP sessions, as SCTP can support these two types (elastic and non-elastic) of traffic. Finally, we study how SCTP performs when a mobile is multi-homed, i.e. connec...

Mobile ad hoc network congestion control is a significant problem. Standard mechanism for congestion control (TCP), the ability to run certain features of a wireless network, several mutations are not common. In particular, the enormous changes in the network topology and the joint nature of the wireless network. It also creates significant challenges in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), density ...

The evolving fourth generation wireless networks provide heterogeneous wireless access. This feature enables the multi homed mobile devices to seamlessly roam across various wireless access technologies and to connect always to the best available access network that provides the best QOS at a minimum cost. Different applications have different QOS requirements and accordingly their choice of ac...
متن کاملReducing Inconsistent Context Problem on Providing Internet Connectivity for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
This paper discusses a class of problem, called inconsistent context, .which appears due to the mobility of ad hoc nodes among multi-homed Internet domains, the ad hoc routing forwarding strategies, and the requirement of backward/ forward traffic of 2-way connection, e.g. TCP, which must be transmitted through the registered Internet gateways. Solutions are then proposed, which either reduce o...
متن کاملHandover Cost Optimization in Traffic Management for Multi-homed Mobile Networks
In this paper, we study the traffic management problem for multi-homed mobile networks with the objective of minimizing the overall handover cost. Two different traffic distribution modes are considered in our study: the Fractional Flow Assignment (FFA) mode which assumes the bandwidth demand from one connection is infinitely splittable and can be assigned to different wireless access networks,...
